Should you turn off HDR video on iPhone?
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerHDR video keeps more detail in bright and dark areas and looks great on HDR screens. But some apps, older screens and editors show it too bright or washed out. If that happens to you, turn off HDR Video in Settings › Camera › Record Video.
Keep it on if
- You watch on recent iPhones, iPads or Macs.
- Your editor and the platforms you post to handle HDR well.
Turn it off if
- Your videos look washed out or glaring after posting.
- Your editor doesn’t support HDR.
- You need consistent colour across devices.
Where
Settings › Camera › Record Video › HDR Video.
Questions
Does turning it off lower quality?
It reduces dynamic range, but standard video is still sharp.
