iPhone macro mode explained
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerOn iPhones with an autofocus ultra wide camera (starting with iPhone 13 Pro), the camera switches to macro automatically when you get very close. A macro control in the Camera app lets you turn the automatic switch off.
How it works
Get very close to a subject, a few centimetres away, and the camera switches to the ultra wide lens with close focus. A flower icon may appear.
Control it
Settings › Camera › Macro Control adds a toggle in the Camera app so you can stop it switching automatically.
Tips
- Hold very still or use a stand.
- Good light matters even more close up.
- Watch your shadow falling on the subject.
Questions
Can I record macro video?
Yes, on supported models.
