iPhone Action mode explained
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerAction mode, on iPhone 14 and later, adds extra-strong stabilisation for walking, running and moving shots. It crops in slightly and works best in good light.
Turn it on
In Video mode, tap the running-figure icon. On some iOS versions, it’s under the camera controls.
When to use it
- Walking and talking.
- Running or playing with kids or pets.
- Filming from a moving vehicle (as a passenger).
Trade-offs
- Slightly narrower view.
- Needs good light; there’s a low-light option in Settings › Camera › Record Video on supported models.
- Lower maximum resolution than standard video on some models.
Questions
Do I need a gimbal?
For everyday walking shots, Action mode is often enough.
