The iPhone 17 front camera: what changed for selfies
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerApple says iPhone 17 models have the first square front sensor on iPhone, with a wider field of view and up to 18MP photos. You can shoot landscape or portrait while holding the phone upright, and Center Stage can widen the view for groups.
What Apple announced
- A square front sensor with a wider field of view.
- Landscape or portrait selfies while holding the phone upright.
- Center Stage for photos expands the frame for groups.
- Dual Capture: front and rear cameras at the same time in the Camera app.
What it means
If you have an iPhone 17 model, wide group selfies get much easier. On older phones, widen the front camera with the two-arrow button, or use apps that pick the widest front format your phone supports.
