The wide front camera explained

Short answerMost iPhone front cameras open slightly cropped. iPhone 11 and later can widen the view, and iPhone 17 models have a square front sensor with a wider field of view.

Some recent iPhone models offer a wider view on the front camera, so more of the room or more of your group fits in the shot.

When it helps

  • Group selfies.
  • Showing more background.
  • Holding the phone close to you but still getting a wide shot.

The trade-offs

A wide view can stretch faces near the edges, and can make your arm or the phone more visible. Keep faces nearer the centre.

Check your model

Not every iPhone has the same front camera. Look up your model's specifications on Apple's website.
