How to clean your iPhone camera lens (and why your photos look hazy)

Short answerWipe the lens gently with a clean, dry microfibre cloth. If that doesn’t clear it, slightly dampen the cloth with water. Avoid paper towels, harsh cleaners and anything abrasive.

The haze problem

Fingerprints on the lens cause soft photos and glowing halos around lights. Phones live in pockets and hands, so the lens is often smudged without you noticing.

How to clean it

  1. Use a clean, dry microfibre cloth.
  2. Wipe in small circles with light pressure.
  3. If needed, slightly dampen the cloth with water.
  4. Check with a test photo of a light source.

Avoid

  • Paper towels and tissues, which can leave fibres or scratch.
  • Household cleaners and solvents.
  • Compressed air from close range.

Still blurry?

If photos stay hazy, check the case isn’t covering the lens edge, remove any screen protector over the cameras, and restart the phone. Persistent problems may need Apple Support.
