How the iPhone front camera flash works
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerThe front camera has no LED flash; instead the screen lights up brightly (Retina Flash) at the moment of capture. It helps in dim rooms at close range but can’t light a big scene, and it can make skin look flat.
How it works
The display flashes a bright, colour-matched light at your face as the photo is taken.
When it helps
- Dark rooms, close selfies.
- Filling shadows from overhead lights.
When to skip it
- Group selfies at a distance.
- When any natural light is available.
Questions
Does it work for video?
Screen flash is for photos. For video, face a light source or use a small light.
